Chicago's State Street in 1940
Another 1940 John Vachon photograph from the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs collection: Looking south on State Street, from the northwest corner of State and Randolph. You can download high-resolution versions of the photo here. The block with the movie theatre and jewelry store was the "Block 37" that sat vacant from 1989 to 2005. A new office tower (home of my office!) and shopping mall finally opened in late 2008.
